Becoming Friends

Becoming Friends is a series of discussions about Quakerism developed by Woodbrooke and the Quaker Life Central Committee of Britain Yearly Meeting. The image above comes from a Special Interest Group about Becoming Friends offered at Ireland Yearly Meeting 2017 by Denise Gabuzda, Pat Mohally and Jens Reinhard.

The aim of Becoming Friends is to support and nurture both those new to Friends and those who have been attending for longer. It can also help participants develop an understanding of Quakerism, while exploring their own journey and connection with Friends.

The list above gives an idea of the range of activities included in the course. The topics covered in the eight units are shown below. The topics can be considered in any order, and if desired only a subset of the topics can be used. Here in Ireland Yearly Meeting, Becoming Friends has been run in small discussion groups facilitated by one or two experienced Friends, and this has worked well.

Booklets for the course were first published by Woodbrooke in 2010, and were out of print by 2019. Woodbrooke offered an online course for Meetings for a while, but this is no longer being offered. Fortunately, Ireland Yearly Meeting obtained electronic (pdf) versions of the original materials when the booklet went out of print, which are available on this page. When used, please acknowledge that these materials were first developed by Woodbrooke and the Quaker Life Central Committee of Britain Yearly Meeting.

Below are two pdf files containing the Becoming Friends materials.
